Reconquista Internet (from Spanish reconquista "recapture") is a 60,000 member civil rights movement for "love and reason on the Internet and a civilization of social discourse in social networks."

It represents a counterbalance to the structures of the Reconquista Germanica network, which has now been disbanded . The aim is concerted action to deal with hurtful, insulting and inciting remarks by radical network activists with reason and decency .

It was launched on April 26, 2018 by the German satirist Jan Böhmermann in the program Neo Magazin Royale . Böhmermann held the German constitution into the camera and shouted: "Everyone who adheres to the strict rules of this secret manifesto is allowed to participate!"

By self-definition, Reconquista Internet distinguishes itself from the subject of satire by its condemnation of political extremism and an emphatically friendly tone. The project assumes that an above-average minority in social networks has a negative influence on the public discourse through well-coordinated actions and steers it according to their interests. The project was created against the background of research for the ARD format funk . The term "satirical project" is a metasatire of the self-definition of Reconquista Germanica as a satirical project. Two lists of Twitter profiles that contributed to Reconquista Germanica campaigns or belong to a right-wing extremist network of profiles were published independently of ZDF . The “ Guilt by Association ” scenario was launched by critics in this regard .

According to an evaluation by the microblogging service Twitter , #ReconquistaInternet was the third most-used debate hashtag of 2018.

After broadcasting the program and the subsequent founding of the citizens' movement, the AfD made a small request to the federal government, which asked them to put pressure on the ZDF to dismiss Jan Böhmermann. Reconquista Internet responded to this request by answering it on behalf of the federal government. In this answer, the AfD is informed of logic errors in its request and explains why the federal government will not comply with its request.

Actions

  • On May 7, 2018, Reconquista Internet projected the message “Persevere, friendly Dresden! You are not alone! ”To the Frauenkirche in Dresden and thus first gained major media attention.
  • On May 23, 2018, on the 69th birthday of the Basic Law, activists from Reconquista Internet laid copies of the Basic Law frozen in blocks of ice in front of the doors of the AfD party headquarters so that it could no longer be opened. The activists wanted to remind the party to adhere to the Basic Law. The party was a target of Reconquista Internet, as many Reconquista Germanica activists are AfD supporters or even members. This provoked outrage on the part of the AfD in particular.
  • Reconquista Internet has made it its mission to combat hate speech . As part of their “standard check” campaign, such comments can be reported, which are then checked and, if there is a need for action, forwarded to the appropriate authorities. In addition, the civil rights movement started a poster campaign asking Facebook to participate in consistently countering hate speech, since according to Reconquista Internet statistics, too few hate comments are actually deleted.
