The Redfir Lake-Kapitagas Channel Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve in southwest Labrador in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . It was established as a provisional reserve in 1995. In 1999 the protected area received its current status.

location

The reserve is located south of Ashuanipi Lake on the course of the Rivière aux Esquimaux . It consists of two parts: a 3 km² area at Redfir Lake ( ) and a 79 km² area along the Kapitagas Channel ( ). The Redfir Lake is a small river widening of the Rivière aux Esquimaux, while the Kapitagas Channel is the more than 10 km long narrow inlet of the same river into the Ashuanipi Lake. There is no road connection to the reserve.

Redfir Lake-Kapitagas Channel Ecological Reserve protects the only Banks pine tree population in the province. The Redfir Lake area to the south is being re-colonized by the tree species after a fire. In the Kapitagas Channel area to the north is an older Banks pine tree population. The reserve is located in the Labrador's Mid Subarctic Forest ecoregion . The most common tree species is the black spruce . Lichen of the genus Cladonia is widespread in the area.
