The genus Cladonia includes around 500 species of lichens worldwide . About 100 species are native to Europe.
description
Cladonia species are very variable in their growth form. Most species are made up of a flat lawn of flakes or leaflets and erect stems ( Podetien ). The podiums are varied; they can be club-shaped, fan-shaped, cylindrical, pin-shaped, trumpet-shaped, whorled or branched. The brown, red, and rarely yellow fruiting bodies ( apothecia ), which rarely contain spores, are formed on these stems . Cladonias spread through fragments from the thallus or podium.
