Cladonia rangiferina , often referred to as real reindeer lichen, but also erroneously as Icelandic moss , is a shrub lichen with tanned branches that are conspicuously pointed to one side. It is an important part of the reindeer's diet, especially in the winter months. You need about two kilograms of lichen (dry weight) per day.
features
The whitish real reindeer lichen grows bush-like on the ground. The hollow trunks ( podiums ) are gray-white and richly branched with branches in three or four standing from open armpits. The surface is matt and looks a bit felty. The stems have no leaflets or scales. Fruit bodies ( apothecia ) are rarely developed.
ecology
The lichen is widespread in the deciduous deciduous forest and boreal coniferous forest zone as far as the tundra . There it grows on rocky subsoil and prefers acidic soils in light-rich locations in dwarf shrub heaths , poor grasslands and very light forests.
meaning
The edible, but very bitter lichen can be used to produce aquavit . Individual lichens are preserved and used as trees for architectural models.
