Cladonia coccifera is a lichen that belongs to the genus Cladonia . It is also known as scarlet cup lichen. The specific epithet coccifera is derived from the Latin word coccum and means "core of tree fruits" from pomegranates, "scarlet berries or kermes". Galls of the Kermes oak ( Quercus coccifera ), which are caused by the Kermes scallop ( Coccus ilicis ), were used for the production of a crimson or scarlet color. The epithet here refers to the red apothecia .

description

The yellow-green lichen forms fairly regular cups, with red apothecia at the edge . The yellowish color comes from the usnic acid it contains . The podiums are up to two centimeters high, with cups up to one centimeter wide that are densely covered with small, rounded clods. In places there may also be specimens with protruding leaflets, on the rim of the cup with red pycnidia or curved red apothecia . Basal leaflets are numerous and up to 5 (8) millimeters long. They are colored like the podiums. These are white on the underside, but the base is yellowish to yellowish brown.

Distribution and location

The lichen grows on acidic, poor soil, moss-covered rocks, mainly in mountainous locations in bright locations. It is widespread from central / southern Scandinavia to mountainous areas in the Mediterranean area .
