The Theresian Schüttkasten stood in the place of today's redoubt and was demolished in 1911

The Reduta (Eng. Redoute ) is a neoclassical building in the old town of Bratislava. It is the main venue and seat of the Slovak Philharmonic .

The redoubt is located between the squares Hviezdoslavovo námestie (formerly Promenade Square) and Námestie Ľudovíta Štúra , (the former Coronation Hill Square), the northern border of which it forms at the same time. Today the building is a listed building.

The Theresian Schüttkasten

At the behest of Maria Theresa in the years 1773–74, the Theresian "Schüttkasten" with a beautiful classical facade was built on the site of today's Redoute , which served as a grain store for the city of Pressburg. The original plans, provided with Maria Theresa's handwritten appraisal and marked with the year 1773, are in the Budapest State Archives. They are clearly signed by Franz Anton Hillebrandt , the designer of the building. The builder Franz Carl Römisch was entrusted with the construction of the building.

The bulk box was a purely functional building. The narrow sides of the building facing the Theaterplatz and the Danube were designed as main facades with three axes each. The central axis corresponded to a risalit, which below, almost over the entire width, occupied the portal. The portal was flanked by two double pilasters and ended with a round portal arch - at the ends of which two urns were attached. The building was crowned with a triangular gable, the tympanum of which was decorated with the coat of arms and the crown of the Kingdom of Hungary . In addition to numerous decorations, the following inscription was placed on the building:

"Providentia Mariae Theresiae Aug. Res frumentaria Bono Publico Costituta Anno MDCCLXXIIII"

The bulk box had four floors on the long side of the building with four rows of small rectangular windows that were divided into sixteen axes. The building was covered by a mighty hipped roof. Inside it had six platforms with small ventilation openings that offered space for a volume of 160,000 Metzels of grain. The building was built for the then enormous sum of 60,000 gold guilders.

Redoubt

At the beginning of the 20th century, the bulk box was no longer needed and the city administration therefore considered using the building for cultural purposes. However, since no satisfactory solution could be found, it was decided to demolish the building, which also happened in the first quarter of 1911.

The new building was built on the site of the Theresian Schüttkast according to plans by the Budapest architects Desző Jakab and Marcell Komor . Construction began in 1913, but was delayed due to the First World War , so it wasn't finished until 1919. The Redoute is one of the first buildings in Bratislava to be built using the iron-concrete construction method . The Redoute, with its beautiful large hall, has been used for many years to hold carnival balls and various cultural events.

Since 1949, after a concert organ was installed in the great hall, the headquarters of the Slovak Philharmonic has been located in the Redoute . There were also various club halls and one of the first cinemas in the city of the same name. The owner was the city; after the Second World War the building was nationalized.

organ

In 2012 a new organ was installed by the organ building company Rieger from Austria. This replaced the previous Rieger-Kloss instrument from 1956. The organ has 66 registers with manuals and pedals. It can be played from a (mechanical) main gaming table and a mobile (electrical) gaming table. The stop actions are electric.
