Redwood Castle (also Egan Castle , Irish Caisleán Choillte Rua ) is a castle in Lorrha in County Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland .

History of the castle

The Anglo-Normans built the complex around 1200 and held it until around 1350, when the Egans (Irish: Mac Aodhagáin ) took control of the region.

The Egans clan founded a school here, over which the family held patronage for several hundred years.

Redwood Castle was enlarged and remodeled several times, with the most notable works taking place in 1350 and 1580. The thick stone walls of the fortress show some typical features of the Irish castle construction of this period. B. a Sheela Na Gig .

The castle remained under the rule of the Egans and O'Kennedys until it was razed and confiscated in the course of the conquest of Ireland around 1650. The facility remained in ruins; only the thick outer walls were left until the private investor, Michael J. Egan, bought them and renovated them in 1972.
