As early as the 6th century, St. Ruadhán († 584), a follower of St. Finnian of Clonard , the Master of the Saints of Ireland , founded a monastery in Lorrha. The Viking Turgesius , who also attacked Monasterboice , probably plundered it in 842. In the 12th century it burned down three times. The church and the church ruins of the place are on the list of National Monuments of Ireland.

Also noteworthy are:

  • a Dominican church founded by Walter de Burgh , 1st Earl of Ulster in 1269.
  • the still in use church of the Protestant Church of Ireland , with parts from the 13th and 15th centuries. The remains of an early high cross from the Ossory group were found in the cemetery, which is a remnant of the first monastery .
  • St. Ruadhán's Church is a remnant of the 15th century Augustinian monastery Beatae Mariae Fontis Vivi. The church still has remains of the five-part east window. There are lancet windows in the north and south walls .

In the village is also the now well-restored Redwood Castle (also Egan Castle), a Norman tower house founded in the 13th century , which housed a law school of the Egan clan (see Brehon Laws ) for several centuries .

The missals

Lorrha or Stowe Missal , found in 1735 in Lackeen Castle , 3 km east of Lorrha , one of the oldest missal books in Europe, is said to have originated in Lorrha in the 9th century. His Cumdach is kept in the National Museum , the book in the Royal Irish Academy . The missal is the only surviving example of the divine liturgy of the Celtic Church . In 2006 the Faddan More Psalter was found near Lorrha .
