Reed Slatkin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reed Eliot Slatkin (born January 22, 1949 in Detroit , Michigan , † June 20, 2015 in Los Angeles ) was an American entrepreneur and the creator of one of the largest pyramid schemes in the history of the United States since that of Charles Ponzi .

Slatkin grew up in an affluent Detroit suburb and attended Cranbrook School before studying at the University of Berkeley .

Later, Slatkin began doing illegal business. Slatkin's system collapsed in 2000 after investors complained to the US Securities and Exchange Commission that they could no longer withdraw their money. Reed Slatkin received $ 200 million or $ 240 million, depending on the source, from over 500 wealthy investors, including many Hollywood celebrities.

He admitted his guilt in court and was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison.

Slatkin was a Scientology member like many of his victims. In November 2006 it became known that Scientology would repay the sum of 3.5 million to the bankruptcy administrator as part of a settlement because money had flowed to various Scientology organizations through the pyramid scheme.

Slatkin died on June 20, 2015 in Los Angeles.
