reformed Church

The Evangelical Reformed Church in Campen is located in Campen , East Frisia , in the Krummhörn . The structure of today's church dates back to the late 13th century.

history

The terp village of Campen was first mentioned in the 10th century under the name of Campe maiori . At the end of the 13th century, the residents built today's church as a one-room church on the highest point of the terp. This is also confirmed by the date 1295 affixed to the bell. Immediately after the beginning of the Reformation , the residents of Campen converted to the Reformed religion. This subsequently led to conflicts with the Lutheran count house . In 1564 the village came into the possession of the Lutheran princess Katharina, the daughter of the Swedish king and wife of Count Edzard II. She employed a Lutheran pastor, which led to large protests in the village. From 1640 the Campener received support from Emden and a reformed pastor.

description

The nave.
The organ.

The brick hall church has largely been preserved in its medieval shape. It measures about 24 m in length and has a width of 10 m. The outer walls are divided by three windows each in the north and south. The windows on the north side have been preserved in their original shape, while the windows in the south wall were probably enlarged around 1500 to let more light into the interior of the church. The staggered three-window group in the east wall was changed slightly, the west wall more. The windows of the long sides and the east wall are decorated with blind niches. The original portals were located on the north and south walls, which were walled up in the 16th century and replaced by the gothic door in the west wall. In the south wall, a long, narrow hagioscope was closed in favor of a wider, rectangular one, and the northern hagioscope is also walled up. To the northwest of the sacred building is the closed bell tower, which houses one of the oldest bells in East Frisia from 1295. The three-bay interior shows domical vaults underlaid with decorative ribs . During a restoration in 1938/39, the ornate medieval painting was partially exposed again. You can see images of medieval iconography , in which the battle between good and evil is depicted four times.

Furnishing

The bell of the church is one of the oldest in East Friesland, on it is the year 1295. The pulpit was built in 1794 and the organ followed in 1835. The organ builder, the material from an older organ from the 18th century (probably one House organ) is unknown. The single-manual instrument with attached pedal has seven registers and was restored by Bartelt Immer in 1997 .
