The building originally served as a hospital for the construction workers of the Simplon Tunnel . After its completion, the young Reformed parish acquired it in 1918 and converted it into a place of worship with an adjoining parish apartment.

At the suggestion of the pastor David Last , in 2001, following a resolution by the parish assembly, the name Lukaskirche was given in memory of the church's past as a hospital and of the evangelist Lukas , who, according to tradition, was a doctor.

The interior of the church is clad in wood with elements of Art Nouveau on the baptismal table , on the gallery and on the ceiling paneling. The stained glass windows were added in the 1990s and deal with biblical female figures in an abstract form.
