The Refuge du Couvercle is a refuge in the Mont Blanc massif at an altitude of 2687 m near the Mer de Glace . It is operated by the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc section of the Club Alpin Français .

History and name

A first hut was built in 1904 under the protection of a roof-shaped granite block. It initially offered space for 12 people and after an expansion in 1911 for 26 people. It still exists in this state today, only the wooden outer walls were clad with aluminum. From 1930 to 1932 a second, larger stone hut was built a short distance away, which at first could accommodate 70 people and after an extension from 1950 to 1952 120 people. In this state, apart from minor changes, it still exists today.

The name Refuge du Couvercle comes from the overhanging granite block (Couvercle) under which the first hut (Refuge) stands. Today it is used as a winter room.
