The Refuge du Sélé is a refuge of the Club Alpin Français in France in the Hautes-Alpes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region with a capacity of 76 places. It is located on the top of the rocky cliff that closes the valley of Le Sélé.
history
The word Sélé probably comes from Lou Seilh and means snowdrift . The first hut, which was built in 1924 at 2700 m under a rocky canopy, was destroyed in 1954 when this block collapsed. It was located under the eastern Ailefroide and was called the haven of Provence. The second hut was built from wood in 1957 after this incident. It is located further downstream, on a promontory overlooking the left bank of the Sélé glacier at 2,700 m . A new refuge was built a little further down in 1983. It belongs to the French Alpine Club and has a capacity of 76 seats. It is open from mid-June to early September. The former refuge was restored in the summer of 2001 by a team led by Louis Chiorino. Today it is used as winter quarters and has a capacity of 20 places. This hut is only a 30-minute walk from the new refuge.
Accesses
The ascent takes about 3.5 hours from Ailefroide campsite. The last part requires experience in challenging terrain when crossing a rocky cliff. Cables have been laid to facilitate overhead passage.
