Refugee Law Clinics Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Refugee Law Clinics (RLCs) are offers of student legal advice for refugees ( English : refugees), especially in the area of migration law . There are currently around 30 RLCs in Germany that deal with migration law to varying degrees. In addition to asylum law and migration law, some RLCs also focus on social law and other legal issues related to the topic.

Offers in Germany

The first Refugee Law Clinic in Germany was established in the 2007/08 winter semester at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . Basically, RLCs can be divided into two types of organization: university and student- organized projects. University projects are formally integrated into the organizational structure of law faculties ; they are often directly assigned to a chair or professorship . Student-organized RLCs are mostly operated by a non-profit , registered association . The students handle the organizational effort largely on a voluntary basis. The RLC Giessen is affiliated with the professorship for public law and European law at the Justus Liebig University and thus represents a university RLC.

Student-organized RLCs usually arise from the environment of a motivated group of students who come together to set up a corresponding association. An early example of such a student-organized RLC is the RLC Cologne, which was founded in February 2013. Further start-ups initiated by students followed shortly afterwards in Berlin, Heidelberg, Leipzig, Munich and Hanover. Not all RLCs are called “Refugee Law Clinic”.

The student-initiated RLCs led to a considerable dissemination of student legal advice on migration law throughout Germany. From the beginning, the projects aimed to network with one another. This culminated in the establishment of an umbrella organization of the German RLCs under the name “Refugee Law Clinics Germany” in September 2016 . The umbrella organization should institutionalize and professionalize the work of the RLCs; In addition, there is to be a network with European sister projects.

In the meantime, RLC projects have received various awards, including the RLC Munich the startsocial federal award 2015/2016, the RLC Cologne the engagement award of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes 2015 and the RLC Leipzig the “Ankommer” award of the KfW foundation.
