The Government Building of Ukraine ( Ukrainian Будинок Уряду України / Budynok Urjadu Ukrajiny ) is an architectural monument in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev and has housed the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine since 1991 .

The house, built between 1936 and 1938 according to the design of the Soviet architect Iwan Fomin , one of the most important architects of socialist classicism , is the largest office building in Kiev with 235,000 m². With a roof height of 58 m, it was the tallest building in Kiev from 1944 to 1954 after the “Ginsburg” skyscraper, the predecessor of the Hotel Ukrajina , was destroyed.

Main facade of the building

The central building has ten floors, the side wings have seven and eight floors. The building is a prime example of the application of the principles of classical architecture. The semicircular facade opens towards Hrushevskoho Street (вул. Грушевського) and is evenly framed by tall Corinthian columns , the capitals of which are 2.5 m high and whose bases are cast in iron.

Originally the building was used for the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) and the Council of People's Commissars, which left its mark on the appearance and internal layout. Rounded corners and many corridors make defense easier. The interior of the building is almost entirely devoid of decorative elements.
