Regional portal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Regional portals are web portals with a strong regional reference. The aim of these pages is to give the global Internet regional accents. The aim is to provide the region itself with a forum for information and to offer internet users from other areas the opportunity to get an impression of the region. The content of regional portals can vary greatly and offer news , commercial information or information on completely different topics. Operators of regional portals can be private individuals or companies. The quality and scope of the content depend in part on the extent to which a portal is accepted by the users and provided with up-to-date content.

Types

The number of portals has risen sharply in recent years. A distinction can be made between different types of regional portals:

Tourism portals

Tourism portals communicate the recreational value of a region, especially for those interested in temporarily staying. Since this communication can generate significant added value for the region, the corresponding portals are often operated very professionally and on behalf of the public. Content such as sights, activities, accommodations and useful information such as weather are in the foreground.

Themed portals

Topic portals are aimed at a special group of users who can already be found increasingly in a region or are to be addressed for the first time. Special requirements of a community of interests allow the regional themed portal to gain an advantage over portals that are not regionally focused by adapting to individual structures and special filter options. Subject portals can follow a non-profit informative or a commercial idea, depending on the operator.

Agglomeration portals

Agglomeration portals describes the appearance of portals which are characterized in that primarily freely available information (e.g. addresses, opening times, news) is used and own content is not provided or only to a limited extent. A clever data structure enables the content to be found regionally and presented to the user. On agglomeration portals, advertising and affiliate marketing content are often integrated in addition to the existing content in order to enable the platform to be financed.

Generation

In order to meet the different requirements of regional portals, there is the option of using existing software that can be adapted for the purpose, for example a content management system , purchasing software designed for the purpose or using it as SaaS or independently to develop. Since generating the content of individual regions requires an enormous amount of effort, it is difficult to always provide larger regions with the latest content. Well-organized employees are usually required here to research and compile current events, offers and content or corresponding systems that take on this task.

intention

The intention to set up such a portal can be the curiosity to design a website yourself, or the need to stand up for your region, but also the hope of generating income through advertising income.

Features

In addition to the news, a regional portal can offer an event calendar, a regional business directory or a forum .
