In accordance with Section 46 (3) NKomVG, the regional assembly consists of 84 regional representatives elected for five years by the citizens of the Hanover region (minimum age 16). In the local elections in 2006 , the regional assembly was elected for the second time. The SPD received 33, CDU 30, the Greens nine, the FDP six, the Left Alliance three and the Citizens' Forum two votes. In addition, a non-attached party was represented.

In the local elections in 2016 , the fourth Regional Assembly was elected. The SPD 26, the CDU 24, the Greens 12, the AFD nine, the FDP five, the Left , the Hanoverians, the Region group and the Regions-Linke group each received two votes.
