Tab (also Interleave ) or Routing Slip (also tab ) integrates document sheets or index cards to locate to this easier. The term sheet is mainly in terms of file folders , folder used etc., card contrast to index .

The sheets or cards are made of cardboard , pressboard or plastic . They divide files or index cards into groups and are provided with fixed tabs or relocatable tabs . Tab or tab describe a feature that applies to an entire group. Additional notes can be made on the sheets or cards.

Register sheets or guide cards with tabs that have already been labeled are often used. For example, alphabetical (A – Z) or numerical (1–12, 1–31, 1–52 ..) sorting is common. Others can be individually labeled. Register sheets for filing in folders or binders, so-called dividing strips , are offered with a printed scale, the tabs can be cut individually.

In the graphic user interfaces of computer programs, certain elements used for partitioning are also referred to as tabs .
