They are arranged in a row above and / or in multiple rows on register boards next to the manuals. Since the rocker has a different position in the "on" position than in the "off" position, the organist can quickly see which registers are switched on. Register rockers usually have a white basic color and are labeled with the register name and the number of feet or, in the case of multi-choir registers, with the number of rows of pipes in black font. In addition, color coding can e.g. B. specify the affiliation of the register to a work or the affiliation of the register to the family of reed pipes. Labeling, color coding and arrangement of the rocker registers are not standardized, they differ depending on the organ building workshop.

In addition to registers, coupling can also be switched on and off by rocking registers.

Register rockers consist of the visible rocker and the switch behind it. The use of register rockers requires an electrical or pneumatic register action . In the case of an electrical stop action with a combination as a play aid (setter or free combination), the rocker switch can be designed to be self-adjusting. When a previously saved registration is called up, the organist is given quickly recognizable visual feedback about the activated registers.
