Regius Professor of Anatomy (Aberdeen)

The Regius Professor of Anatomy is a Regius Professor of Anatomy at the University of Aberdeen , founded in 1863 by Queen Victoria . The chair has not been filled since 1993. The professorship itself was founded and filled at Marischal College in 1839. When King's College and Marischal were forced to merge to form the University of Aberdeen, the professorship became the Regius Professorship.

In addition to this anatomy professorship, there is also a Regius professorship in anatomy at the University of Glasgow .

Allen Thomson 1839 1841 After several years as a lecturer in anatomy and as a doctor in Edinburgh , Thomson became the first professor of anatomy at Marischal College in Aberdeen. He retired from the professorship in 1841 to continue teaching at the University of Edinburgh . From 1848 he occupied the Regius Chair of Anatomy at the University of Glasgow for 29 years.
Alexander Jardine Lizars 1841 1863 Lizars was the first professor at the University of Aberdeen, formed in 1860 by the merger of Marischal College and King's College. In 1863 he was forced to withdraw from the professorship because of his compulsive drinking habits.

John Struthers Esq., MD, 1863 1889 Struthers took over the newly established Regius Professorship after working in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in a general restructuring. One of his measures was to update an anatomical exhibition for teaching purposes. His contributions to comparative anatomy can still be found today in the collection of anatomical and zoological specimens. In 1898 Struthers was ennobled.
Robert Reid MBCM 1889 1925 Reid studied under his predecessor Struthers and took on an assistant position there. The skillful anatomist significantly expanded the museum's collection. His most important work concerned the skull , where Reid's Line was named after him, and the brain , which he dealt with in various works.
Alexander Low MA, MD, LL.D. 1925 1938 Low's early work on the development of the mandibular bone earned him an international reputation. Low the university owes an excellent collection of lower jaw bones of Bronze Age people.
Robert Douglas Lockhart MD, Ch.M. 1938 Sep 30 1964 Prior to his appointment, Lockhart had taught at the University of Birmingham . At that time, the professorship included the honorary curatorial position of the anatomical museum. Like his predecessors Struthers and Reid, he expanded the collection of the university's anatomical museum. His most important book was published in 1959, co-authored with Gilbert F. Hamilton and Forest William Fyfe "Anatomy of the Human Body", which saw several editions in several languages. In his private life, Lockhart developed a passion for rhododendrons , for which he was a recognized expert and even produced his own breeds.
David Cecil Sinclair Esq., MB, Ch.B., MD, MA 1964 1976 Sinclair continued to develop the curriculum and, from 1965, instituted a regular memorial ceremony for those who donated their bodies to science.
Edward John Clegg Esq., MB, Ch.B., Ph.D., MD, FIBiol 1976 1993 Clegg was the last Regius Professor of Anatomy. He was a recognized authority on the historical demographics of isolated populations.
