Regius Professor of Physiology (Glasgow)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Regius Professor of Physiology (originally Regius Chair of Theory of Physic or Institutes of Medicine ) is a 1839 by Foundation of Queen Victoria founded Regius professorship at the University of Glasgow . In 1893 the name was changed to Regius Professor of Physiology.

In addition to the chair in Glasgow, there is another Regius professorship in physiology at the University of Aberdeen .

History of the chair

The first professor was Andrew Buchanan. He had worked as a surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and made a name for himself among colleagues with the introduction of the Glasgow Medical Journal . Among biochemists he is considered one of the founders of the subject. His research on blood clotting was fundamental for later work on this topic. Buchanan taught physiology , pathology , therapy, and hygiene with the help of two assistants . But modernity did not move in until 1876 with his successor John Gray McKendrick , who was already trained as a physiologist.

When McKendrick took over the chair from the University of Edinburgh in 1876 , he said there were only a few ancient microscopes and a sphygmograph . McKendrick began teaching with equipment he had bought in Edinburgh after Hughes Bennett retired. In 1903 money became available for a new institute building and when McKendrick retired in 1906, he handed over a modern, well-equipped institute to his successor, Noel Paton. McKendrick added physiological chemistry and experimental physiology.

In the 20th century, three areas that were originally subordinate to the Department of Physiology were separated. 1908 Psychology (was first psychology ) put on their feet. In 1919, with the Gardiner Chair of Physiological Chemistry, biochemistry was separated. Edward Provan Cathcart took over the professorship until he was appointed Regius Professor himself in 1928. In 1964, with the Chair of Pharmacology, pharmacology was separated from physiology.

The acting Regius Professor is Tomasz Jan Guzik.

John Gray McKendrick MD, LL.D., FRS 1876 1906 M'Kendrick preferred the apostrophized spelling of his name. Like the Professor of Institutes of Medicine at the University of Aberdeen, William Stirling was a student of Hughs Bennett . And like other students of Bennett, he completely restructured the work at his place of work, modernized the curriculum and added experimental work.
