The Regius Professor of Political Science , later also Regius Professor of Government , is a previously existing professorship for political science at the University of Essex , who was appointed Regius Professorship by Elizabeth II on the occasion of her throne anniversary in 2013 . It is the only Regius professorship for this subject.

History of the professorship

When Queen Elizabeth II, in preparation for her diamond jubilee, commissioned a commission to select six chairs that would be eligible for a Regius professorship, the applications were so convincing that she finally named twelve professorships. One of them was the professorship in political science at the University of Essex. The first professor was David Sanders , who among other things made a name for himself as co-editor of the British Journal of Political Science from 1990 to 2008. In the then ongoing Brexit debate, Sanders campaigned heavily for the UK to remain in the European Union and called on former Prime Minister David Cameron to split the Conservative Party of Great Britain and to found a centrist party, Great Britain in the EU would hold.
