The Regius Professor of Psychiatry is one of twelve Regius Professorships that were founded by Elisabeth II on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee in 2013. This chair is the first Regius Professorship in Psychiatry and the first at King's College London . The choice of universities and subjects was made on the basis of the high quality education and research in the respective subject areas.

History of the professorship

Maudsley Hospital , attached to King's College London, is known for a whole series of discoveries and researches: understanding the neuropathology of epilepsy , psychiatric epidemiology and genetics , introducing cognitive behavioral therapyand development of global, mental health care. In addition, a new model of care was introduced at Maudsley, in which research, teaching and the reintegration of patients into society in an institution are aimed at. King's College was selected as the institution for this and other services. After the announcement of the new Regius Professorship, three years passed before Simon Wesseley was appointed as the first Regius Professor of Psychiatry in October 2016 . Wessely gave his introductory lecture on May 4, 2017.
