The War Food Office, which had previously been outsourced from the Reich Office of the Interior , had its seat in Berlin and was under the supervision of the Reich Chancellor . He was responsible for the food policy affairs of the empire. The board of directors of the office consisted of seven to nine members, including the chairman, with the chairman having the official title of President of the War Food Office .

The War Food Office was given the status of a Reich authority in 1917 and was henceforth headed by a State Secretary who was bound by instructions to the Reich Chancellor. On November 19, 1918, the name was changed to Reich Nutrition Office. Four days later the central purchasing company was outsourced from the business area of the Reich Economic Office and placed under the authority of the Reich Food Office.
