The Reid Glacier is a 18 km long glacier in the US state of Alaska .

geography

It is located in Glacier Bay National Park, approximately 116 km northwest of Hoonah . The approximately 18 km long and 1.8 km wide glacier flows from the Brady Icefield , located in the southern Fairweather Range , in a northerly direction and flows into Reid Inlet , a small side bay of Glacier Bay .

Glacier development

In 1899, the Reid Glacier still covered the entire bay of Reid Inlet . Since then, the glacier has retreated more and more and is now about to become a land glacier. The eastern and western thirds of the ice front were already dry in the early 2000s. The central third was still surrounded by sea water at high tide. The withdrawal rate of this central third was 10–15 m per year. In 2004 the ice front had an average height of almost 50 m above and an average depth of 3–10 m below the waterline. The ice speed was estimated at 5 m per day at the time.

Naming

The Reid Glacier was named by members of the Harriman Alaska Expedition after the American geophysicist Harry Fielding Reid .
