Reine Adelaide Sophie Alapini-Gansou (born August 11, 1956 ) is a Beninese lawyer and judge at the International Criminal Court .

Live and act

Alapini-Gansou studied from 1979 jurisprudence at the University of Benin in Abomey-Calavi . There she completed her studies in 1981 with the Diplôme d'Études Universitaires Générales , and in 1982 she also obtained a Master of Business Law and Judicial Carriers . In 1986 she was admitted to the bar in Benin and has been working there since then. In 1999, after postgraduate studies at Maastricht University and the University of Togo, she received diplomas in environmental law and politics. She has been a lecturer at the University of Benin since 2002. From 2005 to 2017, Alapini-Gansou worked as a special rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders in Africa. In the same year she became a member of the African Commission on Human Rights and the Rights of the Peoples , of which she was chair from 2009 to 2011. She was a member of a United Nations commission of inquiry into human rights violations in Africa, including the Ivory Coast, Mali and Burundi. From 2012 to 2014 she was also a judge at the Permanent Court of Arbitration .

In 2015 she was a lawyer at the International Criminal Court. She has been a judge there since March 2018 and as such has been involved in the proceedings against Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi , William Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta , among others . In addition, she has published several publications, mostly in French, on human rights, the protection of women in Africa and Beninese family law.
