Reinhard Mocek

Reinhard Mocek (born November 12, 1936 in Chemnitz ) is a German historian of science.

biography

After graduating from high school in Borna near Leipzig, Mocek studied philosophy at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig from 1954 to 1959 , with Ernst Bloch and Klaus Zweiling , among others , with a second subject in biology. Afterwards he was assistant and aspirant at the local institute for philosophy. In 1965 he received his doctorate at the Martin Luther University Halle with the thesis "Philosophical and scientific-historical aspects of development mechanics". Then he was a lecturer at the Philosophical Institute of the MLU, where he completed his habilitation in 1970 with the thesis "The ideological function of philosophy versus modern natural science".

From 1970 to 1991 he was professor and head of the Center for the History and Theory of Science. Here he published the worksheets on the history of science . He also became chairman of the expert commission on the history of science and technology formed in 1983 within the GDR's historians' society .

In the run-up to Christmas in 1990, he complained about the liquidation of the humanities and social sciences in the GDR. From 1990 to 1993 he held visiting professorships in Konstanz and Bremen and in 1991 was involved in an ABM project at the Luisenstädtischer Verein Berlin.

In 1993 he became a researcher at Bielefeld University and from 1998 to 1999 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. In 2011 he was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea .
