Reint E. Gropp (born December 21, 1966 in Bottrop ) is a German economist and president of the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Halle (IWH) and professor of economics at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg . His main research interests are in financial economics, macroeconomics, corporate finance, and money and banking.

Life

Gropp studied economics at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and the University of Wisconsin , Madison . In 1994 he completed his PhD in Economics there. From 1994 to 1999 he worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, DC and from 1999 to 2007 in various positions for the European Central Bank (ECB), most recently as Deputy Head of the Financial Research Division. Then Gropp was Professor of Financial Economics and Taxation at EBS University Wiesbaden until 2012 . From 2012 to 2014 he was a professor at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , where he held the endowed professorship for Sustainable Banking and Finance.

Since November 2014 Gropp has been President of the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Halle (IWH) and holds a chair for economics at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg . He is a Fellow of the Center for Financial Studies , Frankfurt am Main , and co-editor of the Review of Finance. He is a consultant for the Bank of Canada and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco , among others .

Positions

In 2019, the IWH, headed by Gropp, suggested in its report “United Land - Three Decades after the Fall of the Wall” that only the cities should receive funding in the eastern federal states. After criticism from politicians, Gropp reiterated this position: "The big cities are the engine of development - and have an impact on the countryside."
