In 1956 Josef and Gisela Schmidt founded the travel agency Schmidt GmbH in Wolfenbüttel . Before that there was a haulage company in Dorstadt under the direction of Wilhelm Schmidt Senior, Josef Schmidt's father. In 1964 the company was granted the concession for the first school bus route. Wilhelm Schmidt junior joined the company in 1984. In 2010, Germany's first private coach terminal was opened in Wolfenbüttel . In 2017, the acquired motor truck manufacturer Büssing was reintroduced as a brand in the region in cooperation with MAN . In 2018, Georg Wilhelm Schmidt joined the company as a further managing director.

In addition to its own bus terminal, the company has branches in Wolfenbüttel , Braunschweig and Schöppenstedt .
