The protagonist of the series is called Elinor and is 15 years old in the first book. She lives in Munich, alone with her father, since her mother died a few years ago. When her father goes out with a woman for the first time since her mother's death, Elinor is angry and jealous and is afraid that Kirsty, the new friend's name, will take her father away from her.

Kirsty inherited a house in the country from her aunt and when they all go on vacation there, Elinor is anything but enthusiastic at first, but then she meets Jörn and Matty, who live and be friends with their parents at the Dreililien stud farm next door deal with them. She also likes the country life surprisingly well and so she decides to come with her when her father tells her that he and Kirsty want to move to the country and not stay in a boarding school in Munich, which he offers her as an alternative.

Soon she spends every free minute on Dreililien and her new friends Matty and Jörn only call Nell, as she is called throughout the book series.

The problems with Kirsty soon resolve and Nell finds her first love in Jörn. Since the stud is in financial difficulties, the friends decide to open a riding school on Dreililien. They receive support from the young riding instructor Mikesch, the farmer's daughter Carmen, the riding student Roddy, who later meets with Carmen, and Matty's friend Maja. In the course of the book series there are also a few other characters.

The ten volumes deal with how the young people cope with their everyday life together and extend over a total of four years. It is not only about the problems of a stud like horse diseases, financial worries and the loss of animals, but also about general issues such as love, friendship, jealousy and death. Reithof Dreililen became so popular as a book series precisely because it is not limited to horse topics, but rather contains an exciting and emotional book series for young people.

What is also special about the books is that the young people deal a lot with politics and the destructive actions of people. For example, the Chernobyl reactor disaster and the cruel keeping of animals in cramped stables out of greed for profit are discussed. In the book series, the advantages of ecological living and peaceful interaction with one another and tolerance towards other people are often emphasized. Again and again the protagonists take to the streets for their opinions and take part in demonstrations.

There is a lot going on in the ten volumes and the series is not properly closed because the last volume does not bring all of the storylines to an end. On the contrary: The tenth volume contains many points of contact for further stories, but Ursula Isbel did not continue the series after that. In the case of radio plays, they thought up three more episodes themselves to bring the series to a better end. One notices clearly with these episodes that they did not come from Ursula Isbel's pen, since the actions there correspond to many views that the protagonists previously rejected. In the last episode, for example, a horse show is held, which has always been described as cruelty to animals in the books.
