Relais & Châteaux is an association of luxury hotels and restaurants . In 2015 the group had 530 members in 64 countries on all five continents with a total of 12,600 rooms. According to its own information, the association itself achieved a turnover of 96 million euros through reservations in 2015, the hotels of the association achieved an annual turnover of around 1.7 billion euros with 1.8 million guests in 2014.

Relais & Châteaux was founded in France in 1954 and has precisely formulated reception conditions. Most member companies are located in historical castles, estates or city residences and operate gourmet restaurants . In addition to hotels with restaurants, pure restaurants (Relais & Châteaux Grand Chefs) are also included in the cooperation. The chefs at the Relais & Châteaux Grand Chefs usually have two or more stars in the Michelin Guide .

The motto of Relais & Châteaux is “the five Cs”: Caractère, Courtoisie, Calme, Charme and Cuisine (character, friendliness, calm, charm and cuisine).

Admission and membership

Admission criteria

From the catalog of the chain it says about the admission criteria:

  1. The house of the applicant must be able to prove at least one year of business activity under the same owner-operator and / or the same director or the same person in charge of the house. However, if an applicant meets all of the criteria for admission to the association, the Board of Directors may decide on admission once the house is open for a period of time that allows the necessary quality inspections to be carried out.
  2. The applicant must accept the quality charter of the association, in particular acknowledging the fundamental values ​​of the association and the soul and spirit of Relais & Châteaux.
  3. The applicant may not belong to any competing marketing organization and / or hotel chain or must sever all ties to these organizations or chains as soon as the establishment has been accepted into Relais & Châteaux.

Admission, membership and other contributions

The billing of admission, membership fees and other costs is done using a points system. One point is currently around € 73.

The following list of costs is taken from a Relais & Châteaux reception brochure and relates to a medium-sized hotel:

  • Businesses first have to pay an application fee of 25 points - this corresponds to around € 1,820.
  • An admission fee of 140 points plus 25.14 points (corresponds to approx. € 12,020) must then be paid.
  • The global membership fee is currently 108 points as a base value plus 4 points per room and 6 points per suite. For a medium-sized hotel that would be around € 17,600.
  • In addition, a delegation fee of 10% of the annual membership fee is due; according to this example, this corresponds to around € 1,760.
  • A compulsory amount of 14 points, i.e. around € 1,020, is charged for participation in the annual general meeting.
  • The brochure also states: "Every year the individual hotelier members of the association are asked to help finance the media plan."

All in all, a hotel costs € 34,220 in the first year of membership (plus funding for the media plan). There are also reservation commissions, which range between four and seven percent.

Due to the high fees and other reasons, according to a report by Falstaff magazine, there is currently a large decline in membership.

Relais & Châteaux in the DA-CH region

In 2014 the hotel cooperation in Germany had 25 members.

There are currently 12 members in Austria and 28 in Switzerland.
