Rémy Martin is a brand of the spirits manufacturer Rémy Cointreau . In addition to various cognacs ( i.e. brandies ), a Pineau des Charentes , a type of liqueur wine, is also offered under the name Rémy Martin .

history

Rémy Martin is based in the city of Cognac . The name goes back to the Charentais winemaker Rémy Martin, who founded the house in 1724. The house lasted for more than two centuries until it was taken over by André Renaud in the 1920s and completely restructured.

He not only benefited from the fortune of his wife, who had inherited the Frapin house - including a cellar rich in very valuable distillates - but also from his experience in blending ( i.e. blending) cognac. Since then, the Maitre du Chai (the cellar master) has paid special attention to the proportion of so-called Methusalems, which are very old brandies. Rénaud has always attached great importance to the rancio , the buttery-mushroom-like aroma that characterizes high-quality cognacs. Renaud soon made the blending of brandies from the Grande and Petite Champagne, the so-called Fine Champagne Cognac, the most prominent quality feature of Rémy Martin.

André Rénaud died in 1965 at the age of 85 and left the renovated Rémy Martin house to his two daughters. Their spouses André Heriard-Dubreuil and Maximilien Cointreau fought a bitter dispute over the supremacy of the company for many years, which almost meant its downfall. Only the final merger with Cointreau in 1990 ended this dispute.

The fortified wines for cognac Remy Martin builds on more than 150 hectares of its own vineyards. There are also supply contracts with over 2,000 contract growers. To ensure the quality of the barrels, Rémy Martin is one of the few houses that has its own cooperage .

According to its own statements, Rémy Martin is the second largest cognac manufacturer in the world with a market share of around 15%. In 2006 1.8 million cases were sold, which corresponds to around 23 million 0.7-liter bottles (1 case = 9 liters).

particularities

Rémy Cointreau interprets the regulations for the production of cognac for the Rémy Martin brand more strictly than many other manufacturers. Pot stills are used that are considerably smaller than the maximum size of 25 hectoliters prescribed by the Appellation Controllée. In addition, the fires are stored longer than are absolutely necessary for the specified quality levels (e.g. VS, VSOP etc.). The wines are distilled off together with the sediments from the maturation. The effect of this is a special fruitiness and depth of the fire.

Rémy Martin's warehouses can be visited. Rémy Martin claims to be the only large cognac company with a cellar master. In April 2014, the cellar master Pierrette Trichet gave her office to long-time employee Baptiste Loiseau. As a “child” of the region, he spent his time as a helper in the vineyards of the Cognac region and returned home after years of wandering in the vineyards of South Africa, New Zealand and France. As a long-time member of the Tasting Committee, he was carefully trained and built up and is now taking over the responsibility of Rémy Martin's cellar master.

Rémy Martin Cognacs are available in the following quality levels (ascending):

  • Rémy Martin VS (Very Special) is now called “Grand Cru” and is a very young cuvée that has only been computed for a short time and is offered in a clear bottle. It is fresh in taste and has a very light amber note. Rémy Martin VS has not been manufactured since 2008 and has been removed from the Rémy Martin product range.
  • Rémy Martin VSOP : (Very Superior Old Pale). This cuvée has matured in barrels for around seven years. Amber and liquorice dominate this cognac. The bottle used to be made of satined green glass and is now made of white glass.
  • Coeur de Cognac is a redesigned tier between the VSOP and the Club, matured for about eight years and presented in a golden bottle. It is fresher in taste than the VSOP, but with a shorter finish .
  • Club de Rémy Martin (equivalent to the “Napoleon” quality level): Vanilla and amber notes are more pronounced here than in the VSOP. The scent is reminiscent of dried fruit and hay flowers. The bottle is clear and transparent, has an octagonal shape that tapers towards the top with a heavy metal closure (screwed-in cork). This cognac was awarded the silver gold medal at the ISA in 2004 as the best cognac in its class.
  • Rémy Martin Excellence XO Fine Champagne (Extra Old): Cuvée of over 350 different distillates stored in a limousine barrel for 18 years, bottled in a faceted carafe with metal stopper. The color is dark gold, the fragrance is like flowers, the taste would go into the chocolate.
  • Rémy Martin Extra Fine Champagne : This cuvee rests in the barrel for an average of 23 years before this deep amber-colored cognac is filled into its flat, disc-shaped carafe. The taste of this cognac reveals a mixture of fruit and spice aromas with an intense finish. This cognac was awarded the gold medal for the best cognac in the world at the ISW in 2004. Rémy Martin Extra has not been manufactured since 2008 and has been removed from the product range.
  • Rémy Martin Louis XIII Grande Champagne is the house's highest quality cognac and has been produced since 1894. It matured in barrel for up to 100 years after its cuvation and is difficult to describe. The finish of the cognac can still be felt for a long time. The carafe is made of Baccarat crystal and its shape is reminiscent of a bagel . The oversized crystal plug is always an eye-catcher. Exactly 10,000 bottles of this cognac are produced annually, only 1,000 are reserved for the German market. Price around 1450 euros.
  • Rémy Martin L'age d'Or : rare version in a Baccarat carafe with 24-carat gold-plated shoulder and base, was given out in small numbers to selected people.
  • Rémy Martin Louis XIII BLACK PEARL : This cognac was considered the most expensive in the world. The cuvée of 1200 different distillates matured in a barrel for up to 100 years until it was discovered and its contents were filled into 786 individually numbered bottles. Outwardly, it hardly differs from its "smaller" brother, but it is filled in a lead crystal carafe that has the color of a black pearl. In 2007 a bottle cost over 6,000 euros. In 2008, Rémy Martin launched a magnum version (1.5 l) of the Black Pearl.
  • Rémy Martin Louis XIII Rare Cask : This limited edition is the successor to the Black Pearl and has been available since November 2009. The limited edition of 786 numbered copies is presented in decanters made of Baccarat crystal glass. LOUIS XIII Rare Cask comes from a barrel that the cellar master Pierrette Trichet discovered in the Rémy Martin cellars in 2004. This one barrel has a higher alcohol content - 42.6 in contrast to the usual 40 percent by volume. Therefore, Rare Cask is the only Rémy Martin cognac that has more than 40%.

All cognacs have 40% vol . Furthermore, a Le Pineau des Charentes , a fortified wine with 17% vol , is offered under the Rémy Martin brand . Pineau des Charentes is popular as an aperitif in France . It is made from unfermented must with appropriate brandies and its taste is reminiscent of a cream sherry .
