Renée Adorée , nee Jeanne de la Fonte , (born September 30, 1898 in Lille , France , † October 5, 1933 in Tujunga , California , USA ) was a French actress.

Life

As the daughter of a circus artist couple, she performed in the arena at the age of five and toured Europe with various theater groups as a teenager.

When the First World War broke out , she was on tour in Russia. From there she fled via London to the USA to New York City , where she found a new field of activity in the emerging film business. She got her stage name Renée Adorée from the film studio for which she played her first film role. She became known to a wide audience through commercially very successful films such as The Great Parade (1925), the role of Musette in La Bohème (1926) and The Lady Behind the Curtain (1928).

In 1921 she married the actor Tom Moore , with whom she also directed the film Made in Heaven , after only six weeks of acquaintance in Beverly Hills, but the marriage lasted only three years. In 1927 she married William Sherman Gill, but this marriage also failed early and was divorced after two years.

In 1930 Renée Adorée fell ill with tuberculosis . She received treatment at a sanatorium in Prescott , Arizona , and left when she was recovering in 1933 to reappear in front of the camera. Shortly thereafter, however, her health deteriorated rapidly and she died on October 5, 1933 in Tujunga , California, shortly after her 35th birthday.

On February 1, 1960, a star on the Walk of Fame (1601 Vine Street) was dedicated to her.
