Renaissance Antiqua (also Mediaeval or Mediäval ) is an early font class according to DIN 16518 . It is divided into the Venetian Renaissance Antiqua and the French Renaissance Antiqua , although this distinction does not play a role in practice.

Renaissance Antiqua is the first pure form of Antiqua with lowercase and uppercase letters . It emerged from the humanistic minuscule according to the humanistic form principle of the 15th century .

use

When the baroque and neo-classical antiqua emerged, the renaissance antiqua went unnoticed for a long time. It was not until the second half of the 19th century that its usability was recognized again and it is still in great demand today.

Today's Renaissance Antiqua typefaces are based almost exclusively on the typefaces of the typographers Nicolas Jenson , Francesco Griffo and Claude Garamond .

features

A Renaissance Antiqua typeface is characterized by a harmonious typeface and very good legibility. Style features are the small differences in the line widths, rounded transitions to the serifs , a wedge-shaped approach to the verticals and the axis position of the round shapes ( shadow axis ) from top left to bottom right .

The cursive was not developed from the normal style of the Antiqua, but independently from the humanistic cursive , the original form of the Latin script . Therefore, their glyphs differ significantly from those of the normal style. Fats are usually missing or added much later.
