The Renard R-36 was a single-seat fighter aircraft developed by Alfred Renard in Belgium . It should be the time when the Belgian Air Force used Fairey Firefly II replace.

construction

The guy was a sleek low-wing aircraft made of a light metal alloy. The closed cockpit was opened to the rear. The main landing gear was retractable, the wings had a long chord and hydraulically operated flaps. The drive was a water-cooled V12 cylinder Hispano-Suiza 12Ycrs Type 2 with 960 hp.

Development and use

The first flight took place on November 5, 1937 by the works pilot Georges van Damme. A number of modifications were made during the test program, notably a relocation of the air intake and an enlargement of the tail unit. Six machines were planned for testing and in 1938 40 machines were ordered as a pilot series. The prototype crashed on January 17, 1939. At the same time it was decided to procure Hawker Hurricanes . This stopped the further development of the R-36.

variants

Renard R-37
  • R-37: R-36 airframe with 1100 HP radial engine Gnôme et Rhône 14N21. Was exhibited at the Brussels Aviation Salon in July 1939 and captured by German troops in May 1940. The first flight was made by a German pilot on the transfer from Evere to Beauvechain. It was not known at the time that the plane had not flown before. The plane was then taken to Germany. The whereabouts are unknown.
  • R-37B: Planned two-seat torpedo bomber and fighter-bomber. Was not completed.
  • R-38: R-36 airframe with 1030 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin II engine . First flight on August 4, 1939. Reached a speed of 525 km / h. The planned armament was four machine guns in the wings and 80 kg bombs. Was transferred to France and captured by German troops there.
  • R-40: Likewise an R-36 airframe with a Merlin engine with a kind of ejection seat for the pilot. The components were captured by German troops in May 1940.
