Renate Kaasik

Renate Kaasik (until 1930 Renate Palgi , 1930 to 1936 Renate Evert ; 23 August July / 5 September  1906 greg. In Voore , today rural municipality Vinni , Lääne-Viru district ; † April 10, 1993 in Stockholm ) was the first female Cabinet member of the Republic of Estonia .

Life

Renate Kaasik graduated from the girls' high school in the Estonian capital Tallinn in 1924 . Until 1936 she studied Estonian language , literature and philosophy at the University of Tartu . She belonged to the nationally- minded Estonian women's corporation Filiae Patriae, founded in 1920 .

She initially worked as a secretary at the Tallinn Workers' Theater. From 1936 she taught Estonian.

With the occupation of Estonia, Renate Kaasik fled to Sweden via Finland in 1943 . From 1946 to 1973 she worked as an accountant for the Swedish telephone company Ericsson . From 1965 she lived in what is now Stockholm's Hägersten district .

Renate Kaasik held numerous prominent offices in the Estonian exile community. From May 8, 1971 to June 20, 1990 she was a minister without portfolio of the Estonian government in exile under the acting Prime Minister Heinrich Mark (1911–2004). Renate Kaasik was the first female member of the cabinet of the Republic of Estonia.

Renate Kaasik died on April 10, 1993 in Stockholm. She was buried in the Viru-Jaagupi cemetery near her birthplace.

Private

From 1930 to 1936 Renate Kaasik was married to the Estonian economist and publisher Herman Evert (1898–1982). She got her family name Kaasik through her second marriage.
