Renato May (actually Renato Patucchi ; born December 24, 1909 in Sebenico , Dalmatia , Austria-Hungary , † July 17, 1969 in Rome ) was an Italian film editor and film director .

Life

May grew up as the son of the conductor Raffaele Patucchi and his Dalmatian mother Cassandra May. In 1914, the family moved to Italy, where May sought training as an engineer after attending school, but gave it up in 1930 in favor of working as a film critic for "Il Tevere" in Rome. From 1936 to 1938 he visited the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia and devoted himself to film theory (he wrote numerous articles and writings) and the production of short films , but mainly as an editor of documentaries . In 1942 he wrote two screenplays for Marco Elter and Ivo Perilli and finally also edited some important feature films, such as Pastor Angelicus , Giovantù perduta and Cavalcata di mezzo secolo . However, he remained connected to short films and published his writings on film theory, the most important of which was Il linguaggio del film ; Appeared in 1947. It also leads to a teaching position for film theory and directing technique. After a mediocre feature film, his only fictional cinema work under his own direction, Nennella , his activities for the film rested until 1957. Then he resumed his work as a film editor, and from 1961 as a director of documentaries again.
