Renato Zenobi (* 1961 in Zurich ) is a Swiss chemist . He is Professor of Chemistry at the ETH Zurich . He works in the field of analytical chemistry.

Life

Zenobi completed his diploma studies at the ETH Zurich in 1986. In 1990 he received his PhD from Stanford University . He then worked as a postdoc at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Michigan until 1991 . In 1992 he returned to Switzerland, where he found a job at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne . In 1995 Zenobi became an assistant professor at the ETH Zurich. In 1997 he was appointed associate professor and in 2000 full professor. He is a co-editor of the journal Analytical Chemistry (ACS).

Research activity

Zenobi's research areas include laser-based analytical chemistry, electrospray ionization and laser-based mass spectrometry, laser-surface interactions, optical near-field microscopy / spectroscopy, and single cell analysis .

He contributed to the understanding of the ion formation mechanism in matrix-assisted laser desorption / ionization (MALDI) coupled with MS and contributed to the development of analysis tools for the nanoscale, in particular through the invention of tip- enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS).

In 2014 he was awarded the Thomson Medal of the International Mass Spectrometry Foundation .
