The reindeer ( lat. Rangifer or tarandus is a constellation of the northern sky that is not one of the 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) .

description

The reindeer is located in the north of the official constellation Kepheus near the Pole Star (α UMi 1.99 m ), the main star of the constellation Little Bear , in the border area to the constellation Giraffe . The reindeer only takes up a very small area in the sky, and it consists only of very faint stars. No star is brighter than 5.0 m .

history

The constellation Reindeer was introduced by Jérôme Lalande together with the also outdated constellation Harvester ( Custos Messium ) in 1775. There are two different latinizations, therefore it is also referred to as Rangifer vel Tarandus ( vel Latin “or”).
