The first Royale 35 was presented together with the Flying Cloud 30 in the 1931 model year. He had an eight-cylinder in-line engine from his own production with 5867 cm³ displacement, which delivered an output of 125 bhp (92 kW). The vehicle with the largest chassis ever offered in series by Reo with a 3429 mm wheelbase (= 135 ″) was available as a 4-seat coupé, 4-seat Victoria and 5-seat sedan. All three bodies were supplied by Murray . 3 copies with 3860 mm wheelbase (= 152 ″) and bodies by Dietrich were also built.

Reo had invested US $ 6 million in the development of the new luxury models. In the middle of the Great Depression but could afford only a few people such a big car; the Royale was created practically in small series at customer request. Purchase prices started at US $ 2,495.

In the following year, the Royale 35 was further built as the Royale 8-35 , with a 2-door convertible being offered as the fourth model. The Royale 8-31 was a bit smaller and only had a 3327 mm wheelbase (= 131 ″). It was only available as a Coupé, Victoria and Sedan, both in normal and sports versions.

In 1933 the Royale with a long chassis was discontinued for cost reasons. All four body styles were now available on the short chassis as the Royale 8 . At the end of the model year, all 8-cylinder models at Reo were discontinued due to lack of demand.

The never-ending economic crisis forced Reo to offer cheaper models. So they developed a new six-cylinder engine with 3736 cm³ displacement, which developed 95 bhp (70 kW) power. In addition to the Flying Cloud , it was also installed in the Royale models, which were again available with short and long wheelbases. The convertible was no longer offered, but there were coupes, Victorias and sedans in different equipment.

The Reo semi-automatic transmission Self Shifter was new , in which the gears could be changed without using the clutch. The clutch pedal only had to be depressed when starting off.

The sluggish sales put Reo in serious economic trouble. The selling price of the Royale had fallen to US $ 985; nevertheless, demand did not pick up. At the end of the 1934 model year, the Royale was dropped and only the Flying Cloud was offered.
