republic is the former name of the venue SCENE in the old town of Salzburg , the club from the same scene Salzburg is operated. The Salzburg scene is a festival organizer and presenter and producer of contemporary dance and theater. The venue, which is run as an open cultural center, is on Anton-Neumayr-Platz in the building of the former city cinema.

history

The city cinema was built in 1949/50 in place of the house of the Salzburg Museum that was bombed in World War II and opened in 1950 as a Cinemascope cinema with 600 seats. In addition to the cinema screenings, it also served as a venue for various activities, such as boxing matches or a concert by Vico Torriani . Artists often met in Cafe 21, which opened in 1954.

In 1984 the cinema was closed and the building was dedicated as an extension to the neighboring Carolino Augusteum Museum . In 1986 the Salzburg scene was looking for a new venue and found it in the former city cinema. A year later, the house was awarded to the Salzburg scene, but it was only possible to play here in summer because the house had no heating. The house only got heating in 1993 and from now on it could be used all year round. A subsidy of 1.8 million euros from the city and state of Salzburg made it possible to modernize the building in 2002. The infrastructure includes a café, an American bar in the style of the 1950s, which also hosts events. Since the hall can accommodate up to 700 visitors, it is also used by external organizers.

Young Directors Project of the Salzburg Festival

From 2002 to 2014 the Young Directors Project of the Salzburg Festival , initiated by Jürgen Flimm , took place here . It was a theater competition in which up to four projects by young directors and ensembles are presented. A five-person jury selected the winner.
