The American Bar or Kärntner Bar , now also known as Loos-Bar or Loos American Bar , is a small bar in Kärntner Durchgang No. 10, a side street of Kärntner Straße in the 1st  district of Inner City . It was designed by the architect Adolf Loos in the Art Deco style and is now a listed building .

history

Adolf Loos designed the bar in 1908, also based on his experience during a stay in the United States from 1893 to 1896. The interior is only 4.40 × 6.00 × 4.10 m. Mirrors give the room additional depth. The materials used are wood , glass , brass and onyx . The bar is one of the early works of architectural modernism in Vienna and is assigned to the Art Deco style .

In 1989 the Loos Bar was restored by Burkhardt Rukschcio, and the portal sign, reconstructed by Hermann Czech for an exhibition in 1985, was attached. Since the 110th anniversary on June 21, 2018, the employees have been wearing outfits specially designed for the Loos Bar by the Austrian-Vietnamese designer La Hong .

Operation of the Loos Bar

The bar is run by Loos-Bar Barbetriebsgesellschaft mbH, founded in March 1976. It has been managed since 1995 by Marianne Kohn (born October 27, 1945), who ran the Viennese scene club U4 from 1983 to 1987 , where she was also a bartender. In a portrait of the German world in 2012 as the “Queen of the Night” and “probably the most famous bar woman in Vienna”, Kohn has also been the commercial manager of the Loos Bar since November 2003. Adolf Loos worked with her ancestors, the furniture manufacturers Jakob and Josef Kohn .

From January 2002 Hans Krankl was one of the shareholders of the operating company until its shares were taken over by Skender Fani in March 2009 .
