Republic Steel was once the third largest steel manufacturer in the United States .

Republic Steel was founded in 1899 as the Republic Iron and Steel Company in Youngstown , Ohio .

Cyrus Eaton acquired various smaller steelmakers, which he merged with Republic Steel in 1927 with the aim of becoming big enough to challenge US Steel . Eaton bought steel facilities in Canton, Warren, Massilon and Elyria. The Great Depression of 1929 set it back, but the Republic Steel Corporation , renamed in 1930, became the third largest steelmaker in the US after US Steel and Bethlehem Steel thanks to the management of Tom Girdler , a former Jones and Laughlin manager. Their headquarters were in Cleveland , Ohio .

Republic Steel was particularly known for its rabid anti-union policies during the 1930s , as documented in the documentary Republic Steel Strike Riot Newsreel Footage . With the outbreak of the Second World War , when massive arms orders beckoned, the situation gradually improved.

Republic Steel remained profitable until the 1970s, when rising imports, rising labor costs, increasing environmental regulations, and other problems posed serious challenges for Republic and its American competitors. In 1984 Republic Steel merged with Jones and Laughlin Steel , a subsidiary of Ling-Temco-Vought Inc. The entire group has now been brought together under the new name LTV Corporation .

In December 2001, applied for LTV bankruptcy protection to Chapter 11 and a few months later by the International Steel Group acquired that for Mittal Steel Company NV belongs.
