UN General Assembly resolution 3379

The resolution 3379 with the title "Elimination of all forms of racial discrimination" ( English : Elimination of all forms of racial discrimination ) was passed on November 10, 1975 by the UN General Assembly . She identified Zionism as a form of racism and racial discrimination . It also placed Israel on a par with South Africa and Rhodesia .

The resolution was passed by 72 votes to 35, with 32 abstentions. Most of the votes in favor came from the Arab countries, Third World countries and the Eastern Bloc (including the Soviet Union and the German Democratic Republic ). Most western countries (including the USA , the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria ) voted against the resolution. In addition, the USA boycotted the first two UN racism conferences in 1978 and 1983.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc , the controversial resolution was withdrawn on December 16, 1991 by the UN General Assembly by 111 votes to 25 with 13 abstentions ( resolution 46/86 ). No Arab state voted for the withdrawal. In 1998, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan described Resolution 3379 as a “low point” in the history of the United Nations . According to an announcement by the Israeli Foreign Ministry , Israel made its participation in the Madrid Peace Conference in 1991 dependent on the withdrawal of the resolution.
