action

Resonance of Fate is set in the distant future, when the earth undergoes a drastic environmental change. For reasons unknown, toxins that cause cancer have contaminated the soil and water. Humanity could not adapt to the changes and died. The survivors built a gigantic construct anchored in the ground called Basel, an environmentally-cleaning machine that was supposed to purify the surrounding air; the Zenith system. A civilization began to build itself around Basel by building a city on the tower. In order to survive cancer, people's lives were tied to quartz and linked to the Zenith system, making them immune to disease and mutation, but also means that they are forced to stay in the city and have a fixed lifetime.

Civilization gradually began to grow around Basel and people even eventually moved into the interior of the machine itself and its core, resulting in the tower protruding far from the planet's surface. Over the centuries, people built plains around the core and built villages, towns, even amusement parks and landmarks. However, Basel has existed for so long now that people have forgotten why they live there or that there is a world outside of Basel at all. The cardinals who extol the political / religious leaders and Basel and its machinery built their luxurious properties on the highest levels of Basel, in the monster-free "chandelier", while the lower classes clustered around the base and porch.

In their role as PMF (private military company), the group around Vashyron, Zephyr and Leanne has to fulfill orders for their customers and learns the hidden truth about Basel.

Characters

Zephyr ( ゼ フ ァ ー , Zefā ): Grew up in a Konvikt. A few years ago he was involved in an incident in which he met Vashyron, who was tasked with striking him down. He is now part of Vashyron's troop as a hunter. It is spoken by Hiro Shimono in the Japanese version and by Scott Menville in the English version .

Vashyron ( ヴ ァ シ ュ ロ ン , Vashuron ): Earns a living as leader of a hunting group by taking on numerous missions. He was the only survivor of a major military attack under the command of a cardinal. It is dubbed by Ken Narita in the Japanese original and by Nolan North in the English version.

Leanne ( リ ー ン ベ ル , Rīnberu for Reanbell ): A young lady who lives with Zephyr and Vashyron. She met Zephyr while trying to kill her own life and has since joined the Vashyrons hunter group Hunter. It is spoken by Aya Endou in the Japanese version and Jessica DiCicco in the English version.

Combat system

Instead of fighting with swords and magic in turn-based battles as in the usual J-RPGs, in Resonance of Fate firearms are used. The player controls each character alternately in real time across the field, while the opponents attack at fixed intervals. The fights are very tactical and every step should be carefully considered, just one wrong step could decide the game.

reception

It is widely criticized that Resonance of Fate does not advance the story enough. Each of the 16 main missions (one mission per chapter) is introduced by a video and completed by another, otherwise the game consists of side missions.

Furthermore, the sadness and sterility of the dungeons is criticized, because they are usually very gray and unimaginative. Cities and surroundings, on the other hand, are praised for the loving design in steampunk style .

The combat system is, however, revolutionary and could change the mind of almost every meticulous critic, because it is considered extremely tactically demanding.

The very high level of difficulty (not changeable) should also be mentioned. It is already considered to be one of the toughest role-playing games of all time.
