Restaurant Waage (Windisch)

The Waage restaurant in the municipality of Windisch in the canton of Aargau on the Reuss emerged from a farm in the early 19th century. In the multi-purpose building erected in 1819, a restaurant was operated with official approval since 1881. In the course of the 20th century, the house underwent numerous structural changes that only left parts of the front and the south-eastern frontage untouched. The building occupies a prominent corner position in the townscape.

Location

The Waage restaurant, a restaurant since 1881, was built in 1819 as a masonry multi-purpose building in the late Baroque style and still retains the characteristic arched windows from the time it was built on the old residential part . It was modeled on the design of the converted economy; The structural changes to the rear are more disruptive. In its striking location at the junction of Zürcherstrasse and Dorfstrasse, the building plays an important role in the townscape.

The house is an elongated plastered building , which was originally mostly massive . Its half- hipped roof spans the south-facing residential part, which was largely able to retain its appearance, and the adjoining barn volume, which was also gradually incorporated into the inn. The old living area with the actual dining room shows a late Baroque windowing of 4 × 2 window axes characteristic of the early 19th century . The walls made of shell limestone are cut out in an arched pattern, provided with a shop fold and rounded ledges .

A house parapet with a carved garland, which represents a typical Louis-Seize motif, mediates between the arched door walls of the house entrance and the window above . The window openings in the former barn wall, which were probably added in the early 20th century when the barn was converted, were adapted to the existing window shapes, so that the front of the building shows a fairly uniform character.
