Veil of Darkness is a horror action adventure with RPG elements for MS-DOS , FM Towns and PC-98 . It appeared in 1993 and was developed by the Dreamforge company. SSI took over the distribution .

action

The player takes on the role of a cargo pilot whose plane crashes over a remote valley in the Carpathian Mountains . A helpful village girl named Deirdre Kristoverikh rescues the player after the crash and takes him to her father Kirill, who informs him that his arrival was foretold in a prophecy and that he will free the valley from the reign of Kairn. Kairn is the local vampire lord who long ago murdered his father and six brothers so he could take control of the valley. He became a vampire and used his powers to break contact with the outside world. Since then, the valley rests in eternal darkness or, as the title of the game suggests, a “veil of darkness”. Escape is impossible because the valley is completely enclosed by a mountain range and Kairn prevents this because of his power. In the valley there are two villages, a castle, an eerie forest, a lake, a cemetery, a swamp, a gypsy camp , a manor with a labyrinth , a cave system and a monastery . The player must now fulfill several tasks of the prophecy in order to face Kairn personally in his fortress at the end.

main characters

  • The player : can enter any name or alias, and all characters refer to him by that name.
  • Kairn : He's the main antagonist of the game. An evil nobleman who has become a vampire and rules the valley.
  • Kirill Khristoverikh : He is the richest and most powerful man in the valley. The player receives his first assignment from him, which then leads to follow-up assignments.
  • Deidre Khristoverikh : is the daughter of Kirill.
  • The Agrippa : Is an old and powerful book of black magic. Kairn used it to gain power.

Gameplay

All actions are entered with the mouse or the keyboard arrow keys. The screen is divided into two parts. The upper part shows the actual game, the lower part the inventory and the status of the player. The player cannot carry items indefinitely. The backpack bulges if the inventory is too heavy.

There is also a "mirror" that shows the general condition and whether the player has an illness. In conversations, the player can click on a specific underlined word to keep up-to-date with that topic, or they can enter a word when the input cursor appears. If the entered word is suitable, the player will receive an answer. If the player has found certain objects or solved puzzles, this takes him further, i.e. new places to explore appear on the map, which is also in the lower part. Different opponents like werewolves, vampires, skeletons, ghosts, etc. require different weapons. Also, you have to find different plants (and sometimes other items) to cure different diseases.

Others

In the PC Games issue 1/1996 Veil of Darkness was included as a full version. From Microsoft Windows 8 the game requires an emulator such as B. DOSBox .
