The Rethe is a connecting waterway between Reiherstieg and Köhlbrand in the Port of Hamburg . Together with the former, it forms the northeast bank of the Wilhelmsburg inland island Hohe Schaar , the southwest bank of which is the southern Elbe.

At the junction of the Rethe from the Reiherstieg there is the Rethe lift bridge as a road and rail link between Hohe Schaar and Neuhof .
