As a lift bridge for road and rail traffic, the Rethe lift bridge was part of the infrastructure in the Port of Hamburg , which is managed by the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). It crossed the Rethe at the confluence with the Reiherstieg and connected the Hohe Schaar with Neuhof and the (former) eastern free port . This also ensured a mutual alternative between the Köhlbrand Bridge and Kattwyk Bridge .

To replace the lift bridge, the new Rethe bascule bridge was built directly to the west of it, which was put into operation in 2016 for motor vehicle traffic and in 2017 for rail traffic. The lift bridge was demolished from mid-September 2018. The HPA did this on its own after no specialist company could be found that would carry out the work at an acceptable price.

history

The lift bridge was opened on June 20, 1934, after 15 months of construction. The construction was a job creation measure in the Third Reich . With its 50-meter-high lifting towers, the bridge was one of the largest of its kind in the world. With a lifting height of 35.25 m, a clearance height of 42 m was achieved. The span of the bridge was 77 m, the passage width only 44 m. The reason for this was that the bridge spanned the Rethe at an angle of 63 °, as the existing track layout was adhered to. The superstructure was 14 m wide.

The bridge was opened as needed, about 3000 times a year. Although the railroad track was not on the tramway, it crossed the street north of the bridge, and other tracks from the Hohe Schaar port station in the direction of Kattwyk crossed the street south of the bridge. This severely hindered road and rail traffic.

The bridge was badly damaged during the Second World War . Until the 1950s, the modern steel still available had to be given to the victorious powers as a reparation payment . For this reason, old steel that could not be welded was used for the repair of the bridge. In 1972 there was a ship collision. In 1985 a basic overhaul was carried out with a targeted remaining service life of 15 to 20 years. The lift was even increased and the clearance height increased to 53 m. In 2009 all pulleys were replaced after two breaks .
