Hamburg- Neuhof is a district in the Hamburg port area . Neuhof is surrounded by the Rethe , the Köhlbrand and the Reiherstieg and cut through by the Roßkanal and Neuhöfer Canal .

history

Neuhof was an island that was first settled by dairy and vegetable farmers around 1650. In 1672 Otto XI. Karkhoff in Neuhof. In 1813 the Neuhöfer were driven out by Napoleon's troops during the siege of Hamburg . From 1840 the Dreyer shipyard was located on Reiherstieg . The community of Neuhof was incorporated into Wilhelmsburg in 1910. From 1911 to 1914, the Neuhöfer Wohnstättengesellschaft built 87 four-story residential buildings with a total of 966 apartments for around 3,000 people. Allotment gardens were created at the same time. To the south of the Neuhöfer Canal, Olea GmbH, later Ölwerke Julius Schindler, came into being . The Hanseatische Mühlenwerke AG started operations in 1922.

The HEW power plant was built from 1924 and put into operation in 1926/27; It was fired with hard coal, but was also equipped with the largest diesel engine in the world at the time for supplying peak loads. In 1937 Neuhof fell to Hamburg through the Greater Hamburg Law. In 1953 Hansamatex , today VOPAK tank farm, was founded. In 1966 a large new grain handling facility was built on the Neuhöfer Canal for the Neuhofer Hafengesellschaft . In 1970 construction began on the Köhlbrand Bridge . In 1974 Neuhof was declared an industrial area, shortly afterwards the residential development on Nippoldstrasse disappeared. In 1983 the HEW power plant was shut down and replaced by a significantly smaller plant fired with heavy fuel oil. The old coal-fired power plant was demolished from 1990 to 1992; In the course of the demolition work, the four chimneys that can be seen from afar were blown up.
